Story
Mission San Luis was the seat of power for the Apalachee people and the western capital of Spanish Florida from 1656 to 1704. Today it is a 64-acre active archaeological and historic site and Tallahassee's only National Historic Landmark.
Visitors experience the meeting of two cultures through reconstructed buildings, interpreters in period dress and on-site demonstrations. The site also hosts workshops, archaeological tours and special events throughout the year.
Mission San Luis is administered by the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, with support from the Friends of Florida History, Inc.
Good to know
- Entrance: the Tennessee Street entrance is temporarily closed due to construction. Use the west entrance at 2021 Mission Road.
- Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Closed Mondays, New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
- Admission: adults $5, seniors (65+) $3, children 6–17 $2, children under 6 free, active-duty military free with ID, members free.
- Groups: standard rates apply. Call ahead to schedule a guided tour.
- Picnic tables are available and leashed pets are welcome.
- No alcohol or smoking on the historic site.
