Story

The Florida Theatre in downtown Jacksonville opened on April 8, 1927, and at that time it was the largest theatre in the state.

The building was designed by R.E. Hall, with Roy A. Benjamin of Jacksonville as associate architect, in the Mediterranean Revival style.

On August 10 and 11, 1956, Elvis Presley performed six shows on its stage.

After the theatre closed on May 8, 1980, the nonprofit Arts Assembly of Jacksonville bought it, and it reopened in 1983 as a nonprofit venue for the performing arts.

On December 28, 1982, the building was accepted onto the National Register of Historic Places.

Today audiences come to see live performances and classic movies on the big screen.

Its mission is to enhance the quality of life in North Florida through diverse, memorable arts and entertainment while preserving a historic landmark in Jacksonville.
