Story
Diario Las Américas was founded on July 4, 1953, by brothers Horacio Aguirre Baca and Francisco Aguirre Baca. It was the first Spanish-language printed newspaper in South Florida and is the second oldest in the United States.
From the start, the paper has been a key voice for the Hispanic exile community. After the 1959 Revolution it became the main channel of expression for Cuban refugees, and later for Venezuelan and Nicaraguan exiles as well. Its editorial line focuses on freedom, culture, hemispheric solidarity and the defense of human rights.
The Mezerhane Group acquired the newspaper at the end of 2012. Under publisher Nelson J. Mezerhane G., the former afternoon daily became a combined digital and print media platform.
