Story
WFOX-TV is the Fox television station for Jacksonville, broadcasting on Channel 30. Together with its sister station WJAX-TV (CBS 47), it produces local news under the Action News Jax brand from studios at 11700 Central Parkway on Jacksonville's Southside. The station is owned by Cox Media Group.
Channel 30 went on the air on February 15, 1981, as WAWS-TV, built by a partnership of Malrite Communications and Crown Broadcasting, headed by Martin Stein, founder of Jacksonville's Regency Square shopping center. The call letters were named after his granddaughter, Ashley Wellhouse Stein. It started as an independent station with movies, classic TV series and children's shows, and quickly became Jacksonville's leading independent station through the 1980s.
When the Fox network launched in 1986, WAWS became its Jacksonville affiliate and has carried Fox ever since. Clear Channel bought the station in 1989. In 1991 it introduced Jacksonville's first full-length prime-time local newscast at 10 p.m., and on December 30, 1996, it launched its own news department. In 1997 the station moved into its current studios, and from 2002 its newsroom also produced the news for Channel 47 after that station became Jacksonville's CBS affiliate.
In 2009 the newscasts of both stations were united under the Action News name. Cox Media Group acquired the station in 2012, and in September 2014 WAWS became WFOX-TV as part of a major relaunch that added staff and new weekend morning newscasts. Since 2017 the Action News Jax stations have been the official preseason broadcasters of Jacksonville Jaguars football. In 2026 Cox completed the purchase of WJAX-TV, bringing both stations under one owner.
