Story
Tavares was founded in 1880 by Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, a newspaper and railroad man who named the place after a Portuguese ancestor. He hoped it would one day be Florida's capital. It never was. Instead, Tavares became Lake County's seat of government, and in 1919 it was incorporated.
The modern chapter started with a citizen-led "Vision Statement" approved by the City Council. What followed was a seaplane base and marina, plus a virtual runway on Lake Dora, 3,000 feet long and approved by the FAA. The state licensed the base as a public airport in 2010, and the city now goes by America's Seaplane City.
Downtown sits on the shore of Lake Dora. Wooton Park, with its picnic pavilions and boat ramps, is one block from Main Street, the Dora Canal runs nearby, and Orlando is 45 minutes away. About 19,000 people live here.
