Story

The Martin County Board of County Commissioners is the policymaking body of county government in Martin County, Florida. Martin County was created in 1925 through an act passed by the Florida Legislature. It takes its name from John W. Martin, who was Florida's governor from 1925 to 1929.

The commission has five members, each elected to a four-year term. Terms are staggered, and while commissioners are elected countywide, each one represents a geographic district. The board approves the county's operating and capital budgets and passes ordinances. It also sets the millage rate, the tax on real property that funds county government.

The board is responsible for general government services such as fire/rescue, library services and building inspections. It also oversees the development of roads, utilities and parks. A County Administrator appointed by the commission directs county government operations. Twelve departments work under the County Administrator.

Commission meetings take place on scheduled Tuesdays at 9 a.m. in the Commission Chambers at 2401 SE Monterey Road in Stuart. Residents can watch meetings live on YouTube, MCTV On Demand, Comcast channel 20 and U-verse channel 99.
