Story
Miami Dade College opened in 1960 with just under 1,500 students, on land that had once been a World War II Naval air station. It was then called Dade County Junior College and was founded in the era of civil rights, desegregation and the arrival of asylum-seekers from Cuba. Tuition was free for all county residents.
Growth
- 2003: the Florida Legislature approves the name Miami Dade College
- 2004: the Hialeah Center becomes the college's seventh campus
- 2005: MDC awards its first bachelor's degrees
Today
- More than 100,000 students enrolled, and over 2.5 million admitted since 1960
- 167 nations and 63 languages represented in the student body
- Eight campuses and multiple outreach centers
- Winner of the Aspen Prize, among other top national awards
- 35 NJCAA national athletic titles
MDC is also a cultural hub for Miami. It is home to the Miami Book Fair, the Miami Film Festival, the National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, the Museum of Art and Design and MDC Live Arts.
