Story
Hard Rock Stadium is a multi-purpose, open-air complex in Miami Gardens. A multi-year renovation turned it into a center for sports, culture and big events.
History
- 1984: Dolphins owner Joe Robbie announces plans for a new multi-purpose stadium in north Dade County
- Aug. 16, 1987: first game at Joe Robbie Stadium, Dolphins vs. Chicago Bears
- 1989: first Super Bowl at the stadium
- 1993–2011: home of the Florida Marlins, including World Series wins in 1997 and 2003
- 2008: the University of Miami plays its first home game here
- 2015: first phase of the renovation. Every seat is replaced and sideline seats move 25 feet closer to the field
- 2016: the Dolphins and Hard Rock International sign an 18-year naming agreement
- 2017: hosts El Clásico Miami, the first Real Madrid vs. Barcelona match in North America
- 2019: the Miami Open moves here
- 2020: hosts Super Bowl LIV, the stadium's sixth Super Bowl
Over the years it has also been called Pro Player Stadium, Dolphin Stadium, Land Shark Stadium and Sun Life Stadium.
