Story

Lake Butler Hospital opened in 1972 under the name Union General Hospital, as a 27-bed general acute care hospital. Hill-Burton federal funding helped pay for its construction. At the start it was run by the Union County Hospital Board of Trustees.

In 1984 Dr. Abdel Moneim Ramadan bought the hospital to launch a hand surgery specialty program. Medlink Management Services, Inc. took over the hospital in 1994. In 2001 CMS/Medicare certified it as a Critical Access Hospital with 25 beds, opening the way to swing bed (short-term rehabilitation) services. In 2015 the hospital moved its focus away from hand surgery toward growing its short-term rehab program.

In 2019 the hospital installed a CT scanner and remodeled space for a new CT suite. Current services include round-the-clock emergency care, inpatient care, short-term rehab, outpatient lab work and outpatient radiology with X-ray, ultrasound and CT scans. Outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy are offered too, along with primary care at Lake Butler Family & Pediatric Clinic.

In 2020 Paula Webb, one of the three founders of Medlink Management Services, Inc., became its sole shareholder. She serves as the hospital's President & CEO.
